The grant’s purpose is to support research on the impacts of and ways to mitigate impaired driving via real-world data collection in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMIC). AAAM is a multidisciplinary community; we are looking for and strongly encourage collaborations and interdisciplinary submissions.
The published work and (where possible) the dataset will be made available with the support of AAAM. The target is to present the project at the 2026 AAAM Annual Conference in Costa Rica (e.g., short communication or poster presentation).
Research activities are to be conducted from January to October 2026.
A $5,000 grant will be awarded to the chosen proposal to support research costs.
Topics in this domain are many and varied; we do not wish to impose limitations, but here are some examples that may be interesting and possible to complete with the limited time and budget available:
-
A scoping review of the legislation, regulatory, and enforcement frameworks in place to mitigate impaired driving in an LMIC – supported by interviews or focus groups.
-
A knowledge, attitudes, and practices survey on impaired driving in an LMIC.
-
An analysis of law enforcement and/or health system data relative to impaired driving in an LMIC.
-
Using decision-focused evaluation techniques to assess the policies and data available from a heavy truck company on impaired driving in an LMIC.
-
A real-world evaluation of the effectiveness of anti-impaired driving public awareness campaigns in an LMIC, measuring changes in knowledge, attitudes, and self-reported behaviors.
